Tutorial system

Traditional approach generally accepted in the modern academic practice doesn’t allow exploring educational disciplines actively and forms eclectic perception of the studied sbjects in students. Absence of the constant intellectual tension and clearly realized purpose of studying as well as repressive form of the studying activity stimulation (fines, workings-off, threat of scholarship deprivation) and predominance of reproductive forms of studying over the productives leads to such a situation when quality of the education depends not only upon the system of education, but on the accidental factors (good lecturer, good student). As a result good specialist is trained in spite of the present system of education and not because of it.

Present conditions of alumni engagement dependent on the level of labour force market state critically aggravate sittuation of the young specialist. The factors of successful engagement meeting the requiremets of the alumni are not accidental. They are more or less constant. Clever and talented, quickly learning persons are needed everywhere. Practical fairness of that conclusion, the possibilty to prove it leads to the boom of Higher education (both private and national) we can observe nowadays. Though correctly stated aim of guaranteed success is confronted with the impossibility of its realization in framework of the present academic system.

The main problem comes to bringing of the H.A.S. academic system in correspondence with the changeable processes in employment field.

What is tutorial system?

Tutorial system is the traditional English system of teaching. Tutorial system in England is considered as the best form of teaching for over than 600 years. Tutor is supervisor and teacher in the same person however that person is not exactly teacher. In the basis of tutorial teaching underlies medieval tradition of arguments and disputes. Tutor helps in developing abilities of logical thinking and comprehension of the data received during the lectures and library attendance. In case when student chooses several major disciplines at once he gets several tutors.

Studying with tutors and passing the examinations are the only things student is obliged to fulfill in the framework of studying process.

Classic Tutorial system was created and developed in Oxford and Cambridge. It is typical «Oxbridge» phenomenon, however in Germany, France and the United States particular tutorial systems appeared. There’s an educational center in Russia too where tutoring became traditional – Physico-technical department of Moscow State University. There’s no wonder, for Kapitsa is the initiator of Physico-technical department right after visiting England. As a result the best physics graduate from the Physico-technical department.

To change the present state of the academic education in Moldova it is insufficient to introduce western disciplines and to translate new books. Of course it is needed too, but educational revolution in academic education is the most important. We have to adopt not only books and teaching tactics, but the way of teaching and being taught too. Let’s turn to classical example: the number of the students in Moldavian universities’ group is 4 times the amount of that in Manchester university, while the number of books in the libraries of our academies is twice or more times lesser.

Small group is the one of tutoring principles. It doesn’t mean that students are «spoon-feeded» – quite the contrary, because students learn to think independently.

Englishmen still consider that student who is always told what to do should never be a good businessman. Student must be taught thinking.

Tutorial system is developed in the way to meet the particular needs and researching interests of the student to maximum. Tutor controled by the senior tutor elaborates the reasearch purpose and its realization. In the course of the work tutor and his assitant constatly conduct student’s research activity. Thus research and particular skills indispensable in educational and post-graduation activities are formed in the student from the very beginning.

In tutorial projects anthropology student applies combination of practically all fields of anthropological knowledge meeting thus the basic requirement of the modern scientific activity – interdisciplinarity of the research.

Statement of the tutorial system originally incorporated for the first time in the High Anthropological School is present below:

Purpose:
To provide maximum competitive of the H.A.S. graduating students on the potential market in the management, business, consulting and scientific fields.

Objectives:
1. To develop skills and abilities of creative activity and quick self-education according with the requirements of curriculum, student scientific society, publishing activity of the High Anthropological School and profile of the major.
2. To organize problem and deeply disposed and motivated environement of studying process among the students.
3. To elaborate understanding of interdisciplinarity of any science, education and research character.
4. To build up abilities of the acquired theoretical knowledge mobilization for the resolving of professional tasks.
5. To provide methodical and consecutive sientific-educational tasks resolving skills.
6. To create competitive and considerable environement of the creative activity among students, to aim it on the prestige of encouragement.
7. To form settled educational, creative activity, independent positioning and resolving of the problem values.

Conditions:
The main conditions of given tasks realization are:
- high science-academic level of the High Anthropological School staff, willingness for non-standard forms of studying, inseparably linked scientific and educational activities direction.
- hierarchy of the curriculum disciplines incorporating the whole educational process of 4-5 years devided into dscipline-instruments, discipline-methods and discipline-purposes order.

Hierarchy of purposes:
1. Correspondence with the professional requirements of the market as the main purpose.
Ability to study correctly and quickly, self-develop creative skills proved and presented as graduation-paper is instrument.
2. Diploma project as the main purpose.
Curriculum disciplines are the instruments of the diploma project realization.
3. Tutorial activity as the main purpose.
Curriculum disciplines are the instruments of successful term paper realization.

The given hierarchy determines program and mechanism of the incorporated tutorial system:
- Topics assigned for term paper and senior thesis must be interdisciplinary (on the condition that non-interdisciplinary problem does not exist).
- Every term paper should contain the application of knowledge acquired from all curriculum disciplines.
- All curriculum disciplines are devided into purpose disciplines, instrument disciplines and methods disciplines (i.e. history of Romania – purpose discipline, English, Romanian – instrument disciplines, Synergetics, history of Philosophy – method disciplines) depending on the topics of term papers.
- Student fulfills written tasks (frequency is determined by the character of discipline) on each discipline every three weeks (10 pages as minimum).
- All written tasks are determined by the topic of the term paper representing the basic material of the tutorial activity.
- Every student should fulfill not lesser than 10 or 11 tutorial steps according with the tutorial chart (part of the tutorial work).
- Written tasks are given as the problem (non-languages, humanitarian disciplines), as the result of the term paper purposes and with the indications of 3 or 4 main sources.
- In the language course disciplines two tasks are given: reverse translation in all studied languages, except for eastern once per year, 3-5 pages summary of the tutorial project (publishing individual students pages online), regular translation of the original scientific texts on the particular topic – vocabulary, written and selective oral translation is obligatory (amount and terms are specified).
- In exact disciplines topic of the tutorial activiry should be concerned with the purposes of term paper and its realization is the main instrument in promoting the authority of the exact sciences and excuse for their abstract character.
- Supervisor fixes the result after student passes every scheduled tutorial step. Senior tutor should be informed too.
- All tutorial works should be set up on the computer and kept in the special directories with the encrypted files (Scientific supervisor keeps the encryption keys).
- Every student prepares popular scientific version of his work publishing it in the internet-magazine (with the agreement of editor).
- Best tutorial works are proposed for publishing in the scientific editions of the H.A.S.
- On the results of projects upholding the senior tutor recommends tutors for the bonuses of three categories (1/4, 1/2 and monthly wage).
- In case of the failure to fulfill tutorial work students and their supervisors should present explanatory report adressed to the senior tutor. Such students should also pass differentiated credit test on the topic of the term paper (mark is given by 5 points scale).

Tutors are obliged to:
1. Be in the course of daily activity of their students, their results, lectures attendency, spare time and extracurricular interests. Tutors should morally account for the quality of knowledge and training of the students.
2. Determine and scientifically prove topics according with the requirements of the given rules and tutorial chart.
3. Fill up the tutorial chart together with the students and control quality of each step fulfillment.
4. Provide interdisciplinary of the scientific activity of the students, fixing direction and character of the relations with the adjoining sciences, coordinating activity with the specialists of the respective domains of science, in particular:
• Selection of the foreign scientific texts in original.
• Setting spectrum of computer technologies usage.
• Controling natural methods application.
5. Organize individual work with each student weekly.
6. Regularily (1 or 2 times per week as minimum) organize students’ seminars (dates are accorded with the senior tutor).
7. Report (at least once per month) together with the senior tutor on the work stated in the tutorial chart fulfillment.
