Based
on historical and numismatic records, the monograph studies
history of towns on Low Danube and Dniester situated on the
edge of the Golden Horde in XIII-XIV centuries. It was here
that developing civilizations of Slavs and Turks, Byzantines
and Italians, Walachians and Moldovans intersected. The urban
life on this land under administration of the Horde’s khans
was a bright epoch; it became a distinctive border separating
pre-Mongol reality from a new stage in European history that
commenced in the second half of XIV c.
The book is meant for all interested in achievements of modern
historical science in studies of Moldova’s past and the past
of its adjacent territories – from high school students to
university lecturers.

Why
does a man need history?
This is the question the book starts with. Nowadays, when
most of the citizens of the new independent (and other) states
are sort of fed up with history, when danger of speculations
with the mythic «great past» is proved, the answer to this
question is the matter of life or death for our discipline.
In his time, Nitzsche was right to remark that it is not life
that must serve history, but rather history must serve life.
And therefore it must stop being what it used to be – a list
of battles, great evils, and old economic systems. «The history
we would be interested in», as Sir C.P. Popper called it,
must be able to reconstruct what is still relevant to us in
the past: the mentality and world view, attitude to the world
and oneself, in other words, - a way of life, which is very
human. And it is culture itself, as it is understood nowadays.
An art of life – this is what culture is, man’s art of life
in the past is what modern history is about.
This is how the author has formulated his task when approaching
this work. Studying civilisations of classical Antiquity and
pre-colonial Orient, he strived to reduce the list of facts
to the necessary minimum. Instead, he strived to reconstruct
the whole world picture as it was perceived by each of the
studied civilisations: Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, Greece,
Rome, and other. Special attention is paid to those aspects
of these cultures, which are still relevant nowadays.
The book is meant for students of humanities and for all interested
in history and culture.

The
monograph is a publication of two most valuable archaeological
complexes – hoards of the Golden Horde period found on the
Old Orhei settlement (Moldova) in 1963 and 1988. The first
of these hoards contains agricultural tools, the second one
– primarily harness of horse and rider. An analysis of the
hoards enables important conclusions on production type in
the Pruth-Dniester interfluve in the middle XIV century. A
short but quick blossom of these towns is scarcely illustrated
by the remaining sites, therefore publication of these representative
complexes presents an absolute interest.
The book is meant for archaeologists, historians of the Middle
Ages, students and all those interested in history of Moldova.

How
old is Odessa? 200 and something? 600? 700? 2500?
Jubilees are a naive human passion. By large, however, jubilees
have no historical sense. What do ‘round’ figures multiples
of 10, 25, 50, 100 mean? Absolutely nothing. It is just the
matter of our liking.
A particular case of a naive historical thinking – the idea
that Odessa was born «in a void», just like a lonely tree
in a field. In fact, it has been an intensively inhabited
place – nature abhors a vacuum. The Ancient town of Borisphenes
– the wharf Istrian – the medieval anchorage Ginestra, and
then the port and the fortress Hajibei, and finally, a «military
and merchants’ wharf» Odessa.
This book is an attempt to persuade the reader that the time
is not discrete, non-jubilee like. We all roam the same street,
simultaneously and without stop. And the name for this street
is Time. History is nothing else but time that is materialised.
A cobbled road. A sidewalk paved with lava. An asphalted motorway.
As for «jubilees», they are nothing else but milestones along
the roadside.

Original
concept of «warrior» Russian civilization contrast to «wizard»
civilization of the West is stated in that book. It reviews
mutual denial and succession of three generations of Russian
«wizards»: soothsayers, orthodox priests and intellectuals.
Slavonic pagan priests’ (volchvy) origin from medieval walachian
people hypothesis is raised. Union of the incompatible mythological
structures – Christian «martyrs», pagan «heroes» (totem ancestors)
– Hertzen’s «decembrists’ legend» that determined devout interpretation
of Decembrists in intellectuals’ society during 150 years
– is researched in that book. Author follows «Stylish is what
I write» rule and that is the reason of his usage of the good
old structural method. For those who is not indifferent towards
the destiny of own country.
